DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis Since 2006, the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (SACEMA) has led epidemiological research, addressing diverse health issues including HIV, TB, vaccinepreventable diseases, emerging infections, and cancer – significantly influencing public health policies in Africa. Together with strategic local and international partners and health organisations, SACEMA integrates quantitative and life sciences to deliver data-driven insights, forecast disease trends, and evaluate public health interventions. Research and Impact: Key achievements include pioneering HIV incidence estimation methods and characterising the Omicron variant’s increased reinfection risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. Capacity Building: Nearly 200 postgraduate students have obtained degrees in epidemiological modelling or analysis with SACEMA’s support. Since 2007, SACEMA has hosted and participated in the International Clinics on Infectious Disease Dynamics and Data (ICI3D) program, training over 700 junior researchers. Through innovative research, strategic collaborations, and active stakeholder engagement, SACEMA exemplifies the NRF’s commitment to advancing research with impactful societal benefits. DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development The DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development is a virtual academic centre that provides the resources to enable researchers to collaborate cross disciplines and institutions on long-term projects. The three main research areas in which the Centre of Excellence in Human Development supports and grows excellence are: Life-course development describes the development of individuals from conception to death, including multi-disciplinary studies of child, adolescent and adult development. Inter-generational development describes the life cycle from one generation to the next, and includes studies of families and parental influence, both social and biological. Socio-ecological and transformational development represents the interdependencies between societies, societal members and their natural environment. It includes a transdisciplinary mode of research where economic growth can be reconciled with social and environmental objectives. In several areas, researchers in the CoE-HUMAN have made novel contributions to the global, regional and local repository of knowledge, with important impacts on policy.
