Dr Mbuzeleni Hlongwa

Dr Hlongwa is a Senior Research Specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council. His research interests are sexual and reproductive health, social aspects of HIV/ AIDS, and health demography. He holds a Master’s degree in Demography and Population Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand, and a PhD in Public Health from the University of KwaZulu- Natal. Dr Hlongwa is an Honorary Lecturer in the discipline of Public Health Medicine at UKZN. He currently serves as an Academic Editor for two international journals, PLOS Global Public Health and BMC Health Services Research, and is a Guest Editor for the HIV Care Collection in BMC Health Services Research. His current research focuses on HIV and AIDS issues at the intersection of community and healthcare settings, including community-based HIV research aimed at improving men’s engagement in HIV care. Dr Hlongwa has received numerous prestigious awards, including the NRF Thuthuka grant; the SAMRC Self-Initiated Research (SIR) grant; the SAMRC National Health Scholars Program Award; the UKZN’s College of Health Sciences Scholarship; the 2nd Conference on Public Health in Africa Scholarship; the SA 9th AIDS Conference Scholarship; and the 22nd International Conference on AIDS & STIs in Africa Scholarship. He is an NRF Y-rated researcher with close to 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
