Life Sciences Ms Anthea DavidDepartment of Microbiology University of KwaZulu-Natal Ms Anthea David’s pioneering work in biorefinery processes has provided novel innovation in sustainable bioproduct generation from waste-based raw materials, offering viable solutions to global challenges related to resource scarcity, waste management, and climate change mitigation. Lactic acid (LA) has been used as a precursor in various industrial streams to generate multiple intermediate and commodity chemicals. Therefore, its increasing demands, coupled with economic and environmental development, have stimulated the need for renewable and sustainable production of LA. Through her research endeavours, Ms David is poised to make significant contributions that will advance the understanding and application of eco-friendly bioprocessing techniques, thereby shaping the future of LA production and promoting sustainable practices in the biotechnology industry. She completed her undergraduate (Microbiology & Biochemistry), Honours and Master’s studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal where she is also currently enrolled and awaiting results of her PhD in Applied Microbiology. Since 2020, she has published five peer-reviewed articles and two book chapters.
