Dr Simanga Tsela

Board member

Dr Simanga Tsela is the Executive Chairperson of Mzesi Energy (Pty) Ltd, a technical support organisation to the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR). He obtained his BSc in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Swaziland and his MSc in Nuclear Physics from the University of Sussex, completing his PHD in Nuclear Physics at the University of the Witwatersrand. He also holds an MBA from the University of Pretoria.

Dr Tsela has worked and served in various roles in the nuclear sector for over 30 years, the last 17 as an entrepreneur both within and outside of the sector. In these roles he has served in academia; on the Board of Directors of Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (SOC); NTP Radioisotopes, a subsidiary of the SA Nuclear Energy Corporation; and the National Nuclear Regulator as well as at the Chief Executive level at the NNR, PBMR, Arecsa and others. In the nuclear sector he has also served in international organisations as a representative for South Africa, including; International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP); Generation IV International Forum (GIF) within the OECD family; and consulted for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Dr Tsela believes that that things rise and fall in the hands of leaders, and has thus committed his life to human empowerment through the combined vehicles of social entrepreneurship and not-for-profit organisations (in particular faith based). He believes that research and development, amongst others, has a strategic role in long term economic growth when it is wisely guided.
