Thandiwe Matthews

Thandiwe Matthews is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and academic with experience in law and human rights in South Africa, The Netherlands, and the USA. Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Governance, specialising in Law and Sustainable Development. Currently completing a joint PhD between the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam (under the Chair in International Law and Development) and the University of the Witwatersrand's School of Law (under the South African Research Chair in Law, Equality and Social Justice). Applies an intersectional and gendered approach to address systemic inequalities in society. Her interdisciplinary scholarship explores the nexus of the law, sustainable development, and human rights. Formerly Senior Researcher: Civil and Political Rights and Senior Legal Officer at the South African Human Rights Commission. An alumna of the US State Department's Fulbright/ Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program (2015-2016), based at the University of Minnesota's Law School. She holds a Masters in Development Studies (International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam), Bachelor of Laws (University of the Witwatersrand) and a Bachelor of Social Sciences (University of Cape Town).
