Ms Moseme MatlalaNRF Head of Internal Audit My team and I are responsible for strengthening the NRF’s ability to create, protect and sustain value by providing the Board and Management with independent, risk-based and objective assurance, advice, insight and foresight. As Head of Internal Audit, I report functionally to the Audit and Risk Committee which is a committee of the NRF’s Board.I am responsible for developing and ensuring the execution of a strategic vision and plan for the internal audit function that aligns with the organisation’s objectives and risk profile. This involves close collaboration with the Management of the NRF and the Audit and Risk Committee.I oversee a team of internal auditors who perform detailed audits across various business units within the NRF and institutions outside of the NRF. We conduct independent assessments and evaluations of governance, risk and control. These audits aim to identify weaknesses or deficiencies in operational processes, financial reporting, and adherence to regulatory requirements. We communicate audit findings, provide recommendations for improvements, and ensure corrective actions are implemented effectively. By conducting independent and objective evaluations, we assist the NRF in the mitigation of risks with the aim to achieve its objectives, improve operational efficiency, and safeguard its assets. In addition, I ensure that a quality assurance and improvement program is implemented and the internal audit services we provide to the NRF comply with the Global Internal Audit Standards. I am also expected to stay abreast of industry best practices, regulatory changes, and emerging risks that could impact the business of the NRF. This proactive approach enables me to continually enhance NRF’s internal audit processes and ensure they remain aligned with evolving standards and expectations.Overall, as Head of Internal Audit, I play a crucial role in promoting accountability and sound governance practices and contributing to the oversight by the Board. What inspired you to become the leader that you are today? The motivation and inspiration to become the Head of Internal Audit at the National Research Foundation stem from a combination of personal drive, professional ambition, and a commitment to excellence. Auditors are expected to have a strong ethical compass and I am driven by my passion and desire to uphold high standards and integrity. My career progression has been guided by a desire to apply knowledge in a strategic capacity, overseeing and shaping the internal audit function to be effective in support of the organisation’s achievement of objectives.Additionally, the opportunity to subscribe to the NRF’s mission to enable and facilitate the contribution of knowledge and scientific research to national development is a huge motivating factor. I find inspiration in aligning my professional role with a meaningful organisational mission. I am driven by the positive impact NRF makes to science, research and the society at large. This leadership role also offers me opportunities for professional growth and influence. I am inspired by the prospects of mentoring others in the profession and contributing to the broader field of internal auditing. I consider myself a transformational leader – I take pride when there is a change in people’s lives/careers and know that I played a part in it.What advice would you give to the next generation of women leaders? Firstly, women should cultivate confidence in their abilities and knowledge. Trusting themselves and their skills is crucial for overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities as you progress in your career.Secondly, actively seek out mentors and role models who can provide guidance and support. Networking within and outside your organisation can offer insights into different career paths and help build valuable connections. It is important to also prioritise continuous learning and development. Stay updated with trends relevant to the industry you are interested in, enhance your technical skills, and pursue opportunities for professional certifications or advanced education.Always advocate for yourself and others. Don’t hesitate to speak up about your achievements, capabilities, and career aspirations. Championing diversity and inclusion initiatives creates supportive environments for all professionals.Women should embrace challenges and view setbacks as opportunities for growth. Resilience and adaptability are essential traits for navigating the complexities of one’s journey. Women can also excel by setting goals for their career path, always reflecting on achievements, and stepping out of their comfort zones. To conclude, and as advice to all women, do not find yourself in the exact same position you were the year before. Ensure that there is growth both in your personal and professional life.
