wpadmin NRF in the News August 26, 2024 It is with great sadness that the NRF has learnt about the passing of Professor Brian O’Connell, the former Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Prof O’Connell received the NRF’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. He was a rare and passionate individual, a remarkable South African and a great human being, who committed himself to the upliftment of the country’s disadvantaged citizens and the restoration of their dignity. He served as UWC’s Rector from 2001 to 2014 where he played a pivotal role in transforming UWC from an apartheid-era “bush college” and improving its academic standing. International cooperation flourished under his leadership. He also took a bold stance in combating ignorance regarding HIV/AIDS, earning him the role of chairperson of Higher Education South Africa’s Strategic Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the title of Commander of the Order of Leopold II from the Belgian Government for his contribution to the global tertiary institution sector. UWC posted a YouTube video in loving memory of Prof O’Connell that can be viewed here. We extend our condolences to Prof Brian O’Connell’s family, friends and colleagues. Share on Facebook Share on X
