Dr Mbalenhle Mandisa Nxumalo is a Business Management Lecturer at the University of Fort Hare. She is a former DSI-NRF intern and also received funding from the NRF for her Master’s and PhD studies.

How did your journey start?

As I reflect on my journey, a profound sense of gratitude washes over me, tracing its roots back to a life-altering encounter with the National Research Foundation (NRF). When I look back, it still feels surreal.

It all began with my acceptance into the DSI-NRF internship in 2015. I was filled with fear, unsure of how I would even afford the trip to Pretoria. Yet, as Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you…” And indeed, a plan unfolded. With unwavering faith, I embarked on the trip, leaving my two-month-old baby at home. Little did I know this journey would shape my future in ways I could never have imagined.

The NRF became more than an organisation; it became a beacon of hope and opportunity. Surrounded by dedicated professionals during the internship, I found inspiration that ignited my desire for greater achievements. A year later, I took a leap of faith and enrolled in a Master’s program. Fast forward five years, with NRF’s support, I ventured into a PhD, a dream I once thought unattainable.

I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The impact of NRF’s funding and resources cannot be overstated. It opened doors I never thought possible, paving the way for academic success and personal growth. Graduating with my PhD a year ago was a surreal moment—a testament to resilience, hard work, and the invaluable support of the NRF.

To the NRF, your work transcends academia; it changes lives and restores dignity. Your investment in individuals like me, who once relied on NSFAS, is a testament to your commitment to education and empowerment. As I continue this journey, I carry with me the lessons learned, the faith that sustained me, and a profound gratitude for the NRF’s unwavering support. Thank you for believing in dreams and transforming them into realities. May your impact continue to ripple through generations, shaping futures and inspiring hope.

Through their programs and initiatives, I was able to expand my research horizons and make meaningful contributions to my field of study.
  • PhD Funding and Guidance: As I progressed in my academic journey, the NRF remained a crucial ally, especially during my pursuit of a PhD. Their funding support, coupled with guidance from experienced researchers and access to cutting-edge facilities, empowered me to delve deeper into my research interests and push the boundaries of knowledge in my discipline.
