NRF-iThemba LABS launches JINR Information Centre

The iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences (NRF-iThemba LABS) has officially become the 12th institution in the world to host an Information Centre of the Russian Federation’s Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The JINR Information Centre, stationed at NRF-iThemba LABS’s Cape Town campus, was launched on Monday, 09 December 2024.

The centre, which is the first in the Southern Hemisphere, serves as a hub for information-sharing and engagement. It aims to enhance public awareness of nuclear research in South Africa; foster international collaboration; and help to develop the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technicians by connecting South Africa with global research communities. In addition to providing career guidance and hosting scientific and educational events, the centre will showcase JINR’s advanced research tools and methodologies to South Africa. This will enable students to engage in joint research projects with JINR, offering them valuable international exposure and practical experience in high-energy physics and related fields.

In his keynote address, Prof Leslie Lekala from UNISA’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology, reflected on his own developmental journey with the JINR that dates back to 1997 as a Master’s student. “It is incumbent on the hosting institution to create an environment within which the plans and ideals of the collaboration can come to life,” said Prof Lekala.

Mr Charles Mokonoto, Acting Chief Director for Basic Sciences and Infrastructure at the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, said,” We are excited about this milestone that serves as an expression of the Department’s commitment to the development of the next generation through strategic partnerships.”

This intent was underscored by Dr Angus Paterson, the Deputy CEO of the NRF, who said, “The NRF is committed to advance knowledge and to transform lives through the training of students. There is, however, a need to strengthen the existing relationships to ensure downstream benefits to enhance impact and technology transfer. The organic development of the relationship since the signing of the agreement in October 2005, has been a key driver of the continuity of the activities.”

The launch of the JINR Information Centre presents an opportunity to reflect on the path traveled, remarked Prof Grigory Trubnikov, Director of JINR. “We have to become intentional in our efforts to facilitate more effective engagement through NRF-iThemba LABS as the intellectual hub that connects South African Universities,” he said.

Prof Victor Tshivhase, Managing Director of NRF-iThemba LABS, added, “This unique access point to JINR will enable and facilitate opportunities for skills and human capital development within the context of accelerator-based research, data and technology transfer.”
