wpadmin NRF in the NewsScience Matters December 15, 2021 COVID-19 again takes centre stage with a report on vaccine hesitancy in South Africa. The impact of the COVID-19 lockdowns on HIV care is the subject of another study, this time in KwaZulu-Natal, a region with the country’s heaviest HIV/AIDS burden. With 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence in December, it is apt that we also look at this problem which puts women in South Africa at risk of hypertension. There are also two articles that look at climate change – one on the vulnerability of coastal marine species and the other at ways of predicting its effects. There is good news in the area of the treatment of cancer and other diseases as scientists research radionuclide treatment and, while on the subject of radiation, we include an article that ponders what happens to the human immune system during long space travel. We also take a look at why the youth unemployment problem is so difficult to solve.
