NRF Youth Month 2026: Dr Linton Munyai

The NRF is committed to growing South Africa’s next generation of researchers and science communicators. June is Youth Month, and this year the NRF celebrates the youth whose work contributes to meaningful change in South Africa and beyond. We thank all participants for sharing their stories with us.

Dr Linton Munyai is a Senior Lecturer in Water Resource Management at the University of Limpopo. He received funding from the NRF for his Master’s and Doctoral studies, and he is currently supported by an NRF Thuthuka Post-PhD Grant.

Tell us about your academic journey

I was born and raised in the rural village of Ha-Mashau in Limpopo Province, South Africa. From an early age, I developed a deep appreciation for the environment and sustainable resource management. This passion was largely inspired by my grandfather, a subsistence farmer whose close relationship with the land taught me the importance of environmental stewardship and conservation.

After completing my matric studies at Maligana Wilson Secondary School, I enrolled at the University of Venda to pursue a Bachelor of Environmental Sciences degree. My undergraduate studies provided a strong foundation in environmental management and strengthened my commitment to address environmental challenges facing communities and ecosystems.

Motivated by a desire to deepen my knowledge and contribute to environmental sustainability, I continued with an Honours degree in Environmental Sciences at the University of Venda. Upon successful completion of my Honours studies, I enrolled for a Master’s degree, where my research focused on water resources management and the application of remote sensing technologies to monitor and assess algal blooms. This work was conducted under the supervision of Professor Jabulani Gumbo and introduced me to the critical role of innovative technologies in environmental monitoring and decision-making.

Building on this experience, I pursued a PhD at the University of Venda, specialising in Aquatic Ecology, with a particular focus on wetland ecology and conservation. My Doctoral research was undertaken under the supervision of Professor Tatenda Dalu (Stellenbosch University), Dr Lutendo Mugwedi (University of Venda), and Professor Ryan Wasserman (Rhodes University). This research expanded my understanding of freshwater ecosystems and strengthened my commitment to advancing scientific knowledge that supports biodiversity conservation, ecosystem sustainability, and evidence-based environmental management.

Reflecting on my academic and professional journey, I consider my proudest achievement to be the recognition that my research makes a meaningful contribution to society while also being acknowledged by both national and international scientific communities.

One of the highlights of my career was to be selected as one of the participants in the 2024 BRICS Young Scientist Forum. This opportunity brought together emerging researchers from BRICS countries to engage in scientific dialogue, foster international collaborations, and explore innovative solutions to global challenges. Being part of this prestigious platform was a significant milestone that affirmed the value of my research and exposed me to diverse perspectives from leading young scientists across the world.

Another achievement that I hold in high regard is the support from the Rufford Foundation in 2025. The Rufford Foundation is internationally recognised for its support of conservation initiatives that address environmental challenges and promote biodiversity protection. Being awarded a Rufford Grant was both an honour and a validation of the importance of my work in freshwater ecosystem conservation and sustainable environmental management. The grant has enabled me to expand my research activities and strengthen conservation efforts that directly benefit vulnerable ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. It also reinforced my confidence that locally driven research can have global significance and contribute meaningfully to conservation science.

Equally rewarding has been the recognition of my contributions within South Africa. In 2023, I was honoured by the Aquaculture Forum in Vhembe for pioneering an innovative scientific approach to address cyanobacterial challenges affecting aquaculture facilities. This recognition was particularly meaningful because it highlighted the practical impact of my research in solving real-world problems faced by aquaculture farmers.

Furthermore, my appointment as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Water and Sanitation at the University of Limpopo represents another significant milestone in my career. This position provides an opportunity not only to advance research and innovation but also to mentor future scientists and contribute to the development of the next generation of environmental professionals.

How has your affiliation with the NRF impacted your studies/career?

My affiliation with the National Research Foundation (NRF) has been transformative, providing critical support at every stage of my academic and research journey. I first received NRF funding in 2017 through a Master’s scholarship, which enabled me to pursue postgraduate studies and focus fully on my research without the financial constraints that often challenge emerging researchers. This support laid a strong foundation for my development as a scientist and opened opportunities for advanced training and research.

In 2020, I was awarded NRF PhD funding, which further strengthened my research capacity and allowed me to undertake Doctoral studies. The NRF’s investment in my academic growth played a pivotal role in helping me complete my postgraduate qualifications and establish myself within the research community.

The NRF continued to support my career progression beyond my Doctoral studies through the Thuthuka Post-PhD Grant (2024–2026), which has been instrumental in helping me transition into an independent researcher. This funding has enabled me to initiate and lead research projects, build collaborations, and expand my research portfolio.

In 2025, I also received an NRF Travel Grant, which provided me with the opportunity to visit the University of Florida in the United States to receive specialised training in environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques. This international exposure enhanced my technical expertise, broadened my scientific network, and equipped me with advanced methodologies that I have since integrated into my research work.

Importantly, the impact of NRF funding has extended far beyond my personal academic development. The Thuthuka grant has enabled me to support the next generation of researchers by providing research assistance to Honours, Master’s, and PhD students under my supervision, many of whom had limited or no access to research funding. The funds have been used to cover essential research costs, including fieldwork, laboratory analyses, equipment, and other project-related expenses. This support has helped students complete their research projects more effectively and within their prescribed study periods.

Through this investment, the NRF has not only contributed to my career development but has also strengthened research capacity, mentorship, and postgraduate training, creating a multiplier effect that continues to benefit the broader scientific community.

What is your research focus or area of expertise?

My research interest is in freshwater ecology, in particular, plankton and trophic ecology, environmental monitoring and assessment, biodiversity and conservation in rivers, reservoirs, lakes, dams, ponds, floodplain pans and wetlands.

I am particularly interested in how ecological systems respond to an environmental disturbance caused by anthropogenic impacts, hydroperiod and invasive species. Working with fellow ecologists, resource managers and policy makers often stimulates new directions for my research.

Most of my projects use field observations and experiments to better understand the effects of natural and anthropogenic factors on flora and fauna and their role in aquatic ecosystems. I use field studies to identify interesting patterns in nature that may indicate ecological and environmental problems or an interesting natural phenomenon. Manipulative experiments in artificial microcosms and mesocosms are used to confirm cause-and-effect relationships.

What purpose drives your research/work, and how do you hope it will contribute to meaningful change?

My research is driven by a commitment to address some of the most pressing environmental challenges that face society today. Through my work in aquatic ecology, wetland conservation, and freshwater ecosystem management, I contribute to global efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development and protecting biodiversity.

Healthy freshwater ecosystems are essential for water security, climate resilience, food production, and human well-being. By generating scientific evidence on the condition, conservation, and management of these ecosystems, my research supports informed decision-making and helps ensure that natural resources are sustainably managed for future generations. I strongly believe in the power of science to create meaningful change, and I am encouraged by the fact that research findings can influence environmental policies, management strategies, and conservation actions that benefit both people and nature.

One of the initiatives that I am particularly proud of is the promotion of community-led conservation of wetlands of national importance through my NRF Thuthuka-funded project. Many rural communities depend directly on wetlands for water, grazing, cultural activities, and livelihoods, yet these ecosystems continue to face increasing threats from human activities and climate change.

Through this project, I work closely with local communities to encourage stewardship and foster a sense of ownership in conserving these valuable ecosystems. By combining scientific knowledge with local experiences and indigenous perspectives, the project seeks to create sustainable conservation solutions that are both practical and socially inclusive. Seeing communities actively participate in protecting their natural resources reinforces my belief that long-term conservation success is only possible when local people are involved and empowered.

Being a young researcher can be demanding. What keeps you motivated and grounded throughout your journey?

As a young researcher, balancing teaching, research, supervision, and community engagement can be demanding. However, I draw immense motivation from my family, particularly my wife and children, who inspire me to work hard and remain focused on my goals.

Whenever challenges arise, I think about the future I want to help create for them and for the communities I serve. This motivation reminds me that the impact of research extends far beyond publications and academic achievements.

Ultimately, I find fulfilment in staying humble, mentoring and supporting the next generation of researchers, and helping young scientists realise their potential. Most importantly, knowing that my work contributes to the improvement of the lives of people in my home communities and supports the conservation of natural resources that sustain them gives me a deep sense of purpose and satisfaction.
