wpadmin NRF in the News June 5, 2025 The Ocean20 Inception Meeting, held in hybrid format on 28 May 2025 at the University of Mpumalanga in Mbombela, was a milestone event that brought together national and international stakeholders from government, academia, civil society, and the private sector. Under the theme of Inclusion and Sustainability, the gathering highlighted the progress made by the Ocean20 Social Engagement Group and sparked dynamic and thought-provoking discussions on critical issues such as the ocean economy and blue foods. Key messages echoed throughout the day included “There is no sustainable ocean without inclusion” and “Without the ocean, there is no economy”. A range of pressing concerns were raised, from gaps in ocean economy policy implementation to limited support for sectors like blue foods. Delegates called for stronger alignment between policy and on-the-ground realities to unlock the full potential of ocean-based livelihoods.
