South Africa’s unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2023 was recorded at 32.9% and is among the highest in the world. This is an increase of 0.2 of a percentage point compared to the fourth quarter of 2022. What is particularly worrying is the rate of unemployment amongst the youth in South Africa. In fact young people aged 15 – 24 and 25 – 34 are the most vulnerable with the unemplyment rate in these age groups reaching 61% and 39.9% respectively. One of the biggest contributing factors to this worrying trend is a mismatch between an increasingly skills-intensive labour market that is failing to create jobs for unskilled youth. But youth unemployment is not just a South African problem, it is in fact a problem for many African countries. With the youth population in Africa projected to increase, the African Union’s Pan-African University recognises that young people are Africa’s gold. By providing excellent, attractive and globally competitive academic programmes, the PAU is intentionally positioned to invest in Africa’s best young minds, strategically positioning young people as future agents of socio-economic transformation in their countries and in their continent. With a degree from one of the five institutes of the Pan African university, it is envisaged that graduates of the vaious degree programmes can work in almost all countries in the continent.
