Taking Science to the communities of rural Umkhanyakude District in KZN

The Department of Science, technology and Innovation (DSTI) recently joined forces with South Africa Agency for Science and Technology Advancement, a national facility of the National Research Foundation (NRF-SAASTA) to host the Umkhanyakude Career Expo. Held in celebration of National Science Month (NSM) under the nationwide theme, “Science, Technology and Innovation are for Everyone,” the expo formed part of broader national efforts to bring science engagement directly to local communities.

Requested by the DSTI to serve as an official co-organiser, NRF-SAASTA brought dynamic career guidance, scientific discovery, and educational development directly to young minds in the Umkhanyakude District.

The event brought together 720 learners from 12 local schools, alongside more than 50 key stakeholders representing government departments, higher education institutions, science councils, and industry leaders. Together, these stakeholders showcased the vast array of study paths and career opportunities available within the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation (STEMI) landscape.

A central highlight of the event was the keynote address by the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina.

In her address, Deputy Minister Dr Gina emphasised the vital importance of subject selection and academic excellence. She encouraged learners to excel in Science and Mathematics to qualify for tertiary education, secure scholarships, and access opportunities to engage in global research and innovation platforms.

Dr Gina reminded the attending learners that choosing foundational subjects like Mathematics and Physical Sciences opens doors to high-impact careers, not only enabling personal empowerment and tertiary bursary access but also positioning South Africa’s youth to contribute directly to global scientific breakthroughs and national economic development.

Through interactive exhibitions, hands-on demonstrations, and direct engagement with academic researchers and career advisors, the learners gained valuable insights into tertiary entry requirements, funding opportunities, and emerging career paths in the knowledge economy.

By grounding the expo within NSM, the event highlighted the everyday value of science in driving socio-economic growth. NRF-SAASTA’s role as co-organiser underscores the NRF’s ongoing commitment to advancing science engagement, promoting science literacy, and building a sustainable pipeline of future researchers and innovators across South Africa’s rural and under-resourced communities.
