The City is a Garden for Urban Foragers

Urban foraging can be defined as the activity of urban dwellers collecting biological resources such as wild foods, wood for fuel, craft materials and medicinal herbs as well as for subsistence living and cash income. Urban foraging often holds cultural or recreational value for foragers and can help alleviate challenges in food security and poverty and provide assistance against adversity.

Research funded by the DSI-NRF Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) and carried out by Rhodes University looked at the phenomenon of urban foraging in the African context which has been largely ignored but has grown in importance due to the rapid increase in urbanisation in the Global South.
