wpadmin NRF in the NewsPress Release August 5, 2024 The CEO of the National Research Foundation (NRF), Dr Fulufhelo Nelwamondo, will join the opening of the XXXII General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Cape Town, on 06 August 2024. Dr Nelwamondo and Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, will deliver opening addresses alongside IAU President, Debra Elmegreen. This is an historical assembly as it will be held for the first time in Africa in the IAU’s over 100-year history, the assembly will take place from 06 to 15 August 2024 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and online. It is a major event for astronomers across the world held every three years to advance research, foster collaboration, and address contemporary challenges in astronomy. Over 2 000 international astronomers spread across 150 countries will be involved in the event that attracted a whopping 3 000 abstracts. Nearly 50% of the submissions were made by early-career researchers and students, indicating the vibrant future that lies ahead for astronomy. The diversity in career stages among participants promises a fertile ground for mentorship, collaboration, and innovation. The abstracts cover a wide array of topics, with a notable emphasis on surveys and galactic astronomy as well as instruments such as the MeerKAT Radio Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. The South African National Research Foundation (NRF) is the host of the assembly, with the support of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the African Astronomical Society (AfAS).
