NRF Hosts Water Energy Food Nexus Workshop

NRF Hosts Water Energy Food Nexus Workshop

On 29 February – 1 March 2024, the National Research Foundation (NRF) in collaboration with the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and the University of Witwatersrand (WITS) hosted a joint research workshop with the eight consortia research projects currently funded under the NRF-NWO Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus Research Programme. The workshop was hosted at WITS in Johannesburg, South Africa and brought together over eighty participants and stakeholders from the public, private and non-profit organisations from South Africa and the Netherlands. It aimed to facilitate productive networking and knowledge sharing, to identify potential synergies between projects, and to strengthen project impact plans. The intended outcomes of this workshop are to:

  • learn from consortium member experiences and insights;
  • share (intermediate) WEF Nexus project outcomes; and
  • explore effective engagement strategies to accelerate project impact by tapping into the wealth of experience of participants representing the science-policy-practitioner continuum.

The WEF Nexus Research Programme is a bilateral research Programme between the NRF and NWO initiated in 2019. Three bilateral Calls for Proposals have been launched since its inception, collectively supporting eight consortia research projects.

The fourth Call, which will be a regional Call (instead of a bilateral) is anticipated in 2024. For further information on this bilateral programme please contact Mr Teuns Phahlamohlaka on T.Phahlamohlaka@risa.nrf.ac.za.
