wpadmin NRF in the News May 16, 2025 On May 13, 2025, the Anton Lembede Mathematics, Sciences and Technology (MST) Academy in La Mercy, KwaZulu-Natal, proudly hosted a ministerial visit by the Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande. The event was marked by a vibrant Career Expo, reflecting the Department’s ongoing commitment to embedding science, technology, and innovation into the heart of South Africa’s educational and developmental priorities. The National Research Foundation (NRF) was proudly represented by three of its key entities: the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON), and the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). Together, their dynamic and interactive exhibitions offered learners hands-on opportunities to explore cutting-edge scientific fields — from astronomy and environmental monitoring to the broader role of science in public awareness, appreciation, and engagement with science, engineering, innovation, and technology in the country. Minister Nzimande expressed deep admiration for the school’s ethos and achievements. He commended the unwavering dedication of both educators and learners, noting that their commitment goes far beyond the call of duty — with learners and teachers regularly working well into the evenings. The Minister also celebrated the school’s innovative spirit, including the impressive learner-led projects that harness Artificial Intelligence to address real-world socio-economic challenges. Amongst the many exciting science careers showcased, the Minister made special mention of astronomy and South Africa’s global leadership in this field. He praised the world-class astronomical facilities hosted in the country and encouraged learners to dream big. As a symbolic gesture, the Minister signed a book that was donated to the school with a heartfelt message: “We look forward to the future astronomers from Anton Lembede.” During the signing ceremony, he remarked that he has no doubt many of South Africa’s future astronomers will come from this very institution. The Anton Lembede MST Academy continues to shine as a beacon of excellence, showing what is possible through visionary leadership, passionate teaching, and inspired learners. The school’s alignment with the national vision for science and innovation makes it a model for the future of education in South Africa. Share on Facebook Share on X
